Archie Comics’ Kevin Keller
A message from the creator of Kevin Keller, Dan Parent:
"Working at Archie Comics is the fulfillment of a dream for me. I grew up loving the Riverdale High characters, and followed my love of drawing to art school. For over 25 years I’ve been able to write and draw many of the characters in the Archie Comics world.
As a comic book artist and writer, I often use real life experiences in my work. Recently, I thought about the many conversations I’ve had with my kids and their friends about school, friends, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. In doing so I realized that something was missing in the Archie world. There were no LGBT characters.
Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and I sat down to talk about the need for Riverdale to realistically reflect today’s world, and how we would do that. We decided to introduce our first gay character, Kevin Keller.
Kevin is a new student at Riverdale leading life as an out, proud high school student. Despite the fact that Kevin comes from a supportive family, growing up is not easy.
We saw a huge response when we introduced Kevin to our Archie readers. Issues featuring Kevin are the first ones to sell out in Archie’s 70-year history and Kevin’s characters received many accolades, including a GLAAD Media Award. Due to this success, we now have stories about Kevin’s younger years in the form of a young adult novel. We also were inspired to create future stories about his life as an enlisted member of the military who is marrying his boyfriend. We work hard to make sure that Kevin’s storylines include many issues that people face today.
Recently, the It Gets Better Project spent some time with me at Archie Comics, learning more about how we developed Kevin’s story and where we see the future of Riverdale. I’m thrilled that the It Gets Better Project has decided that today is Kevin Keller Day. I love drawing and writing Kevin Keller. I hope you enjoy getting to know Kevin as much as I have."
