For more than a year we’ve been seeing videos telling young LGBT people that it gets better, but now students and staff at the University of Notre Dame are putting out the message that it needs to get better at their school.
The campus group 4 to 5 Movement posted the “It Needs to Get Better” video Tuesday on YouTube, pointing out the lack of an officially recognized gay-straight alliance at Notre Dame and the fact that the university does not include sexual orientation in its nondiscrimination policy.

"It Gets Better," the hour-long TV special focusing on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth, makes its highly-anticipated MTV and Logo debut tonight. MTV doesn't always aim very high, so it's nice when the channel capitalizes on its youth audience to pursue nobler objectives than, say, further enriching the "Jersey Shore" gang. By that measure, it's hard to think of a better union of network and special than "It Gets Better," a one-hour version of Dan Savage's viral campaign -- inspired by alarming suicide rates among gay teens -- to reassure them there is life, and acceptance, beyond high school. Spec is being simulcast on sister network Logo, and if it helps one kid, MTV has done penance for a multitude of sins.

"I don't want to feel alone."
The young woman known only as Vanessa utters those words in a rather matter-of-fact way. A budding singer-songwriter, she lives with her mom, has her whole life ahead of her and is head over heels in love. There's no obvious reason why she should fear solitude, other than the fact that her mother can't accept that Vanessa is a lesbian. Vanessa is one of three young people featured in the new public service documentary "It Gets Better," airing concurrently Tuesday on MTV and the Logo cable channels and anchored by columnist and It Gets Better Project co-creator Dan Savage and his partner, Terry Miller.

It all started with a video, and now it's a TV show. What protects lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youths from considering suicide and, conversely, what makes them most vulnerable to it? The question is of paramount concern because these youths are at least twice as likely to attempt suicide than heterosexual youths, prompting the national “It Gets Better Project” with encouraging video messages from such public figures as Lady Gaga and President Barack Obama.

On Tuesday, February 21 at 11pm, both MTV and LOGO will air a special, hour-long program, It Gets Better, which is a response to the recent and tragic suicides in the LGBT community related to bullying in schools. Dan Savage, co-creator of the “It Gets Better Project” and host of the upcoming MTV series Savage U, will have a key role in the special, and stars such as Adam Levine, Zachary Quinto, Margaret Cho, Chaz Bono, Vinny Guadagnino and Tim Mcllarth and Brandon Barnes of Rise Against will make appearances as well.
